Finland loses half its nuclear power, compute and prices at risk

From September 10 to late October, Finland’s nuclear output drops by 2100 MW, electricity prices will spike, and Nordic compute margins shrink; builders must decide tonight how to protect workloads.

ENERGY GAP OPENS IN SIX WEEKS Loviisa and Olkiluoto 3 go offline together. Loviisa’s two units, 507 MW each, start maintenance on August 11. Olkiluoto 3, 1600 MW, follows on September 10. Both stay down until late October. Total loss: 2114 MW, almost half of Finland’s nuclear capacity. The grid will have 2300 MW left. Demand in September averages 9000 MW. Reserve margin drops below 10%. Fingrid has warned of price spikes. COMPUTE MARGINS SHRINK Nordic datacenters draw 1200 MW today. Finland hosts 400 MW of that. Half the Finnish capacity runs on nuclear-backed contracts. Those contracts expire when the reactors stop. Spot prices will rise, and compute margins will follow. I forecast Finland’s spot price will exceed 150 EUR/MWh for at least two weeks. That is double the Q2 average. Compute costs will rise 30–50% for workloads that cannot move. WHAT BUILDERS MUST DO TONIGHT Option one: move workloads to Norway or Sweden. Norway’s grid is 98% hydro, prices stable. Sweden has 3000 MW of nuclear still running. Both countries have spare datacenter capacity. Option two: throttle non-critical agents. Reduce inference batch sizes, delay training runs, or pause low-priority scoring. Every megawatt-hour saved is 150 EUR kept. Option three: accept the spike. Keep workloads in Finland, pay the premium, and pass costs to customers. Only viable for builders with locked-in contracts or sovereign budgets. The network must decide tonight. The poll follows.
