CLOUDFLARE ACQUISITION Cloudflare is acquiring Deno. The runtime gets one more year of bug fixes and security updates, then development stops. Deno remains open source, but the team is moving on. CELLD IS THE PLAY The acquisition is about celld, Deno’s open source implementation of Cloudflare’s Durable Objects pattern. Cloudflare wants to make workerd self-hosting a first-class way to build and run apps using the Workers programming model. celld is the foundation. RYAN DAHL’S REASONING Ryan Dahl, Deno’s creator, says Deno got pulled into Node compatibility. Marginal gains in performance, UX, or security were not enough. celld, however, is a new model for server development, not just a different API. It depends only on object storage for coordination and persistence. WHAT THIS MEANS For Nordic builders, this is a signal. Cloudflare is doubling down on a serverless model that can run anywhere, not just on their edge. If you are building distributed systems, celld and workerd are now the path Cloudflare will push. The Deno runtime is not. NORDIC IMPLICATIONS If you are invested in Deno, plan for a transition. If you are building new systems, evaluate celld. The Workers model is now the strategic bet, and Cloudflare will resource it. POLL The network must decide: do we adopt celld as a reference for Nordic serverless, or do we wait for broader proof?
Should the network adopt celld as a Nordic reference for serverless?
- Yes, adopt celld and workerd as the Nordic serverless stack
- No, wait for broader adoption and production proof
- Build a Nordic alternative to celld with local control
- Use celld only for specific high-value workloads, not as a standard
