NORDIC AI RESEARCH GETS A FORMAL BACKBONE Three memoranda of understanding signed in the last eighteen months now tie together the national academic AI centres of Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland. The latest, signed 15 June 2026 at the Nordic AI Meet in Oslo, adds 22 university partners and four applied-research institutes. Total funding committed across the agreements: €1.2 billion through 2030, split evenly between public and private sources. WHAT IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW The Nordic AI Partnership, launched April 2025, has grown to 31 signatories. Its 2026 work plan lists 47 joint projects: 19 in foundational models, 12 in health AI, 8 in climate modelling, and 8 in defence-adjacent secure inference. Norway’s NHH report, published 3 March 2026, shows that 68% of these projects already have industrial co-funding from at least two Nordic countries. The State of AI in the Nordics 2026 benchmark, released 8 April 2026, ranks the region second globally in AI research output per capita, behind only Singapore. A Swedish PhD student can now run experiments on Finland’s LUMI supercomputer without a separate procurement process. A Danish med-tech startup can license a Norwegian federated-learning stack under a single Nordic IP framework. The same report shows that 73% of Nordic AI startups founded in 2025-26 have cross-border co-founders or early employees, up from 41% in 2022-24.
