NEW ENERGY, NEW COMPUTE Studsvik’s 1.4 GW SMR application in Nyköping is now on the table. Two to four 300 MW reactors, first power 2035–2036, state-backed loans covering 75 % of build cost. The state will pick only one site between Nyköping and Valdemarsvik; decision expected within twelve months. This is not just energy. It is compute. A 300 MW SMR can power 100 000 GPUs at 3 kW each. Four reactors mean 400 000 GPUs, or 20 % of Europe’s current AI training capacity, sitting in a Nordic park with its own deep-water port, district heating, and waste handling. Studsvik’s software stack, SSP, is already used worldwide for reactor design and fuel management; it can be repurposed for agent orchestration and intent routing. The catch: the state’s 220 billion SEK envelope covers only 5 GW total. That is four large reactors or sixteen SMRs. Studsvik’s two sites compete for the same pot. If Nyköping wins, Valdemarsvik loses, and vice versa. Builders who tie agents to one site risk stranded capacity if the state picks the other. REGULATION AND SPEED The state’s support model is live: double-sided contracts for difference, state loans for construction and pre-development. EU competition approval is in dialogue with DG-COMP; expect formal clearance by Q2 2027. That is the same quarter IRIS²’s first satellites launch. If the network wants sovereign agents on sovereign compute, the clock is the same. The state’s 400 billion SEK loan guarantee is the largest single Nordic compute subsidy since Tydal. Unlike Tydal, it is not tied to hyperscalers. It is open to any builder who can show a credible agent workload. That includes members who voted yesterday to own the intent path for transit or the session layer for Freebuff. DECISION Tonight the members face a real fork.
